Review: The Unrequited

The Unrequited The Unrequited by Saffron A. Kent
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Final Score - 5 FIRE-BREATHER Stars!!!

HELLFIRE!  To say this is the first time I'm reading a Saffron A. Kent book, it pains me so to admit to this ... but it's true.  And hellfire awaits me for waiting so long to get on her!  She has taken the simple premise of a married professor having an "affair" with a student and turned it up a notch, into a breathtaking and utterly exquisite read!  I'll also admit, I didn't know what to expect but now?  I am completely overcome with emotions once again just thinking about/recalling what I read and I'm beside myself.

I was immediately sucked into the story.  It starts off with the slow push and pull between Thomas Abrams (a professor of poetry/creative writing) and Layla Robinson (his not-so student).  This relationship in the beginning is not heartwarming in the least - in fact, it appears to be a train wreck in the making.  Thomas is your average temperamental artist who comes across as a bit of jerk.   However, it's in Thomas that Layla finds a kindred spirit.  She manages to worm her way not only into his life but into his daily thoughts.  You would never realize these two lost souls could find common ground, but their fragile and battered hearts call out to one another - hoping that the other can cherish/heal them.

Layla and Thomas sufferers of unrequited love, both holding onto something that should have been let loose long before - Layla's devotion/love for her step-brother Caleb and Thomas' to his wife Hadley.

Layla is relentless her pursuits.  I fell in love with her tenacity, boldness, and fearlessness going after someone with such a narrow-mindedness.   She's a young woman who has the biggest heart, who believes in love so much that forces others to see it, even knowing she may never find it for  herself. One of the most selfless heroines I've ever had the pleasure to read, Layla owns up to her unfortunate indiscretions and her faults in a way that shows her strength & courage, which she wears like a badge of honor.

It's in this wisdom and her uncanny ability  that she sees in Thomas what he could not see in himself - his extraordinary talent.   However, to me he did not deserve her and quite frankly abuses her in way throughout most of this book.  Yet despite this, they somehow fit and compliment each other in the most unpredictable ways like puzzle pieces with their jagged, misshapen edges that fit perfect together.

In the end, this is a book that will not only consume you, but have you questioning your sanity!   I had a several moments when I gasped out loud, tears flowing from my eyes, and hair pulling in frustration.  But Ms. Kent managed to weave a story of brilliance due to her storytelling - I felt as if Thomas and Layla were actual real life people. It is definitely like no other student/teacher romances I've read. The fierce passion between Thomas and Layla that is made all the more meaningful simply by the unspoken words between them.

THIS is not one to miss as the writing is at its very best.  I will definitely read anything/all future books by Saffron A. Kent.

AP new - synopsis.jpg

On the roof of a house outside Truelove, Maine, master carpenter Max Doyle looks down through a skylight and sees the most beautiful woman he’s ever laid eyes on. She’s naked, she’s gorgeous, and everything about her is perfect, down to the ball-busting tattoo of a rose that wraps around her hip. But it isn’t just any woman making his knees buckle. It’s his best friend, Rosie Madden. And as he stands there, mesmerized and precariously close to toppling off the roof, he knows he’ll never, ever be able to look at her the same way again.

Rosie can’t help but notice that Max is suddenly acting very strange—lots of long stares, totally tongue-tied, and not at all like the slightly cocky hunk she’s proud to call her best friend. She can’t figure it out, until later that night when Max rescues her from the world’s worst date, challenges her to a game of pool, and shows her just exactly what she’s got him thinking about. Repeatedly.

But life is complicated. Rosie’s cat, Julia Caesar, wants to eat Max’s dog Cupcake for an afternoon snack. A dream job threatens to pull them apart. And another glance through the skylight changes everything, one more time. Yet try as they might, they can’t go back to being just friends, because falling in love with the one you’ve always adored?

It feels so good.

Ardent Prose Hosted Release Blitz for ALPHA MALE (A Real Man #14) by Jenika Snow!

Layla

For the last two years Lachlan has been my personal bodyguard. Although I don’t feel in danger and don’t need someone constantly watching me, because it’s Lachlan, I can’t help but feel safe.
I love him.
He is big and strong, with training that makes him deadly. Anyone who is stupid enough to cross him learns that swiftly.
But I’m too afraid to tell him how much I want him. I’m too afraid to tell him that I crave him.

Lachlan

I was hired to be her bodyguard, to make sure she was safe because her father is a senator. But even if her father hadn’t hired me, I wouldn’t have been able to leave her alone.
I love her, want her as mine, and I need to show Layla that she was meant for me.
I need to show her that if anyone looks at her, speaks to her, or thinks they have a right to touch her, I’ll lay them out and not think twice.
She is my world, and no one but me will have her.
I’m done waiting. It’s time I make Layla mine.

Warning: Have a neck brace on hand because this story will give you whiplash. It’s short and to the point, but that’s how we like them. It’s not lacking in the heat department, has an over-the-top alpha hero, and a sweet virgin heroine. No worries, though; you get a safe read with a Happily Ever After and some baby making in the process.

Lachlan

I watched Layla. Always. But it wasn't just because that was my job. It was because I wanted her, fucking badly. I wanted her to be mine, to never know the touch of another man, to look into my eyes and know I’d take care of her.
“Lachlan, location check-in.” Rocco’s voice came through in my earpiece.
“South building of Pearson Hall. Layla should be heading back to the estate within the next ten minutes. I’ll check in once en route.”
“Copy that.”
I leaned against a tree and watched as Layla spoke to some little asshole that I knew was in her economics class. The possessive side of me wanted to come out and stake its claim right then and there. Hell, I didn’t want anyone looking at her, let alone speaking with her.
I clenched my jaw as I watched him reach out and brush a strand of her hair from her shoulder. I wanted to go over there and beat the little fucker to the ground, but I had self-control, was trained to only make a move if absolutely necessary.
Me going over there and being a caveman, throwing her over my shoulder and stalking away to make my claim, was a bad fucking idea.
But even that small touch the asshole gives her pissed me the fuck off.
She was my job, or at least that’s what I tried to tell myself to make it easier to be around her. But being her bodyguard for the last two years made that an impossible task.
Her father, Jonathan Lancaster, was a senator. Even before that, his connections and social standings had made the wealthy tycoon take extra precautions to protect his family, which resulted in him hiring bodyguards twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
I’d been Layla Lancaster’s—Jonathan’s daughter—personal bodyguard for the last two years, before her father took office. I’d already deemed her as mine, even if I hadn’t been a man and told her.
She’d been eighteen at the time I was assigned to her, freshly graduated from high school and starting her first year of college. And from the moment I saw her, she was all I wanted.
From the moment I saw her, I knew she would be mine.
And I’d made sure during that whole time that she was always my priority, my permanent station. The very thought of somebody else protecting her, didn't sit well with me. I wanted to be the one that looked after her.
She ended up walking away from the douche and heading to her car. Layla was stubborn, but I fucking loved that about her. She was independent, which drove her father insane. That included her refusing to have a driver, which was what Jonathan Lancaster wanted. Instead she drove herself wherever she felt like going.
She could be a force to be reckoned with, and it made me want her more.
But the one thing her father would not budge on was her having a bodyguard.
And I was always here, because fuck all to hell if anything happened to her on my watch.

Final Score - 4.5 Stars!

This is another super fast, super hot, super Alpha Male read, as could only be done by Jenika Snow. Her Real Men Series is off the chart!

In this latest installment, we meet Layla, the sheltered daughter of a Senator who insists that she has up close protection in the form of a super hot, super broody Alpha named Lachlan.

They each have unrequited lust for the other. Not to be a spoiler, but do I really need to say it? The protection work he provides is thorough!

Fast paced, no frills, scorching hot and steaming up kindle screens - you want to miss out on it. I just wish the epilogue was a bit more developed.

Final Score - 4 Stars!

This is my 2nd standalone by Missy Johnson I've read. This book was so easy to get into, due the "taboo" factor as I'm on a kick for it as of late. From the moment you start reading the, you're immediately immersed in the story.

In the beginning, years before the main part of the story takes place, we meet a family suffering from the death of a sister/a daughter. She got caught up in the wrong crowd, which had dire consequences - which ultimately ended her life. The event caused a domino effect on rest of her family. Hannah (the main character/heroine of this story) is 10 yrs old at the time and makes the connection that her's sisters involvement with Declan James is what has led them all to suffer.

This family is barely holding on, when tragedy strikes again leaving them all devastated in it's wake. Hannah now has become the strength she feels she needs to be for the remaining family members, left to face life without their loved ones.

Then the story jumps 14 years: Hannah Masters is now 24 yrs old and has landed her dream job straight out of University. She works in Child Protection, a job she not only loves but feels its more of a calling as she's helping to better/enrich the lives of children who have fallen into similar circumstances as she had. But while she lives and breathes her job, its also breaking her heart to know that some kids just can't be saved.

After a particular trying case lands in her lap - the case of a child with an addict mother who constantly returns to her abuser - she’s led to the church doors to a priest named Declan James. The same Declan James she hold responsible for her sisters downfall and her family's demise.

After the the initial shock Hannah has at seeing Declan again, her world comes crashing down around her. How can this man now a priest be responsible for the death of her sister all those years ago? Has he really changed? And how in God's Green Earth does the one man that should be forbidden, become the one man that you end up falling in love with?

Brought together through circumstance and having to work together as a unit brings Hannah and Declan closer to each other than either of them we're prepared for.

The book is broken down into dual perspectives - Declan, the Priest & Hannah - the Child Services Case Worker. Both are struggling with having been brought together because of a child both care deeply for and a past that seems determined to swamp them both under the weight of its sorrow.

I can't say how it ended - only that I was shocked at how well the author brought the story together and made a plausible ending. I didn't want it to end - so caught up in the story, I never wanted Hannah & Declan's journey to end. This book ... *le sigh* The power of forgiveness of one's self and of others is powerful and the central theme of this book.

Review: I Need You Tonight

I Need You Tonight I Need You Tonight by Stina Lindenblatt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Final Score - 5 No! It Can't Be Over Stars!!

This is the 3rd and final installment of the Pushing Limits series. I'm so sad to see it go, but what a BANG it went out on!

This books deals with Mason Dell. He's living the dream, as the drummer in one of the hottest up-and coming rock bands to hit the stage. He's also the resident prankster/comic relief from the previous books. When he receives a call from his best friend saying that his baby sister is unreachable on her cell and has been so for a few days. He then asks if Mason could stop by her place and make sure that she's O.K. and Mason is more than willing to drop everything and honor his friend's request - seeing as how he owes him for having saved his life years ago.

I Need You Tonight offers readers that perfect blend of topical relevance and hot, steamy, romance.
Both lead characters have pasts that are touched by gambling and it's addiction. As a result, both are reluctant to share details of their lives with each other. This of course becomes more of an issue as the story and their relationship progresses. Add the stresses and temptations of life on the road, and the unexpected death of a family member, you have the recipe for someone falling off the wagon and down he slippery slope into addiction once again.

There are lighter moments in this book, such as a wedding and the comic relief of the "swear jar". Stina Lindenblatt's ability to weave reality into her tale, in a way that makes flow both naturally and effortlessly. Her writing shows superb talent and care for both the storyline & her characters. This is not a book you want to pass the chance at reading.

Review: Wicked Grind

Wicked Grind Wicked Grind by J. Kenner
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Final Score - 5 Stars!

Wyatt Royce is successful photographer. He's gearing up for an upcoming exhibit that’s going to showcase the most sensual and enthralling pieces he’s ever created, but he’s missing one thing:  the perfect model and not just any type of model - innocence mixed in with a sexual prowess and a boldness that she exudes naturally. He has a glimmer of this woman in his head, but finding has proven difficult, that is until his past comes flying into his door in the form of a first love, never forgotten and never moved on from.

Kelsey Draper is innocence - in more ways than one. She lives by a strict set of rules & doesn’t break the rules easily as the last time she did - her world blew up in her face, literally. The only thing Kelsey is focused on nowadays is taking care of her younger brother & helping him with medical expenses. Her long ago dream of being a professional dancer has been abandoned.  She needs fifteen thousand dollars and fast, but there's a small window of time in which to achieve this. That is until an opportunity presents itself and she literally walks into a blast from her past.  Now every feeling she’s ever had has quickly resurfaced - ten fold. But after twelve years of hurt and pain, can Kelsey and Wyatt finally move forward and get their chance?

When I read a story that has flashbacks in it, my only wish is that it’s done well - as I need an understanding of what happened then that effected the characters as they are now.  The past was perfectly portrayed, and explained how so fast everything went wrong in Wyatt & Kelsey's relationship. From their first meeting, to watching how their friendship grew into something more, each glimpse into the past was the highlight I needed.  I loved Wyatt’s character and even though he was a bit standoffish in the beginning (the flashbacks perfectly present why he is the way he is now), he redeemed himself and I was cheering for him to get the girl.

The only cause of concern I had was in Kelsey and her reactions during several parts of the story. I felt she needed to be more tough/take charge in certain situations.  Her relationship with her father was the main source of her issues and I felt that he didn't warrant such a presence in her life as he wasn't in the story much if not at all.

If you a fan the author’s previous books for the Stark World, I know you’re going to enjoy this one immensely as some of those characters appear in this book and it's like getting to see old friends again after a long absence.

Second chances romance are my new thing and as soon as I heard about this one, I had to get my hands on it!  Sometimes, life gets in the way or sometimes it's just case bad timing - but there's one thing you can’t deny ... and that's when you know you’ve been given another chance at not only getting your old love back, but somehow, someway making sure the mistakes you previous made don't come back to bite you.  This was a beautifully told story of love, forgiveness, desire and finally finding the strength to become the person you were always meant to be.

Cover Reveal for DEAR BRIDGET, I WANT YOU by Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland!

We are excited to bring you the next cover from New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Authors Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland.

DEAR BRIDGET, I WANT YOU is the next standalone Contemporary Romance Novel from this sensational duo releasing on September 18, 2017!

Model: Philip Van den Hoogenband – Chadwick Models Melbourne

Cover designer: Letitia Hasser, RBA Designs

Dear Bridget,

I’m writing this letter because it’s highly doubtful I’ll ever garner the courage to say this to your face.

So, here goes.

We’re totally wrong for each other. You’re the proper single mum with a good head on your shoulders. I’m just the carefree British doctor passing through town and temporarily living in your converted garage until I head back to England.

But here’s the thing… for some bloody reason, I can’t stop thinking about you in very inappropriate ways.

I want you.

The only reason I’m even admitting all of this to you right now is because I don’t believe it’s one-sided. I notice your eyes when you look at me, too. And as crass as I appear when we’re joking around about sex, my attraction to you is not a joke.

So, what’s the purpose of this note? I guess it’s a reminder that we’re adults, that sex is healthy and natural, and that you can find me just through the door past the kitchen. More specifically, it’s to let you know that I’m leaving said door cracked open from now on in case you’d like to visit me in the middle of the night sometime.

No questions asked.

Think about it.

Or don’t.

Whatever you choose.

It’s doubtful I’ll even end up sliding this letter under your door anyway.

--Simon
