Forgive the lateness of this review. Real Life happened while I was reading this and I had to abandon it for sometime to deal with things happening. Neverless, I have finally finished this book and WOW! I am blown away as this is my 1st real read of a Kasie West book and if I have judge all others based on this one, it will definitely not be my last!
In this book, we meet Indy and her life is falling apart. Rapidly. To the world she presents one face - someone who has it together (who hasn't done this in RL?) - while privately, she's struggling.
Locked in a bathroom with one of best friends will either be the catalyst to getting Indy to open up or keep her secret to herself, and further spiral out of control alienating all those who love her. Teenagers ... right? This was sort of a hard read - as I so identified with Indy and her plight, but I enjoyed the outcome. The alternating timeline was easy to navigate and the character development/dynamic was freshing. Witty banter and jokes helped keep this read from being edgy/dark and kept it light. I definitely appreciated that, especially given what was going on in my own personal life.
Friendships - espcecially with teenagers - are difficult at best. Understanding and wanting to belong are paramount in today's society. The fact that we have not grown enough to move past this, epecially today frustrates me. I often thought back to my own angst filled teen years. Could have been a better friend? Definitely. Could have been more forthcoming with my issues? Could I have built bridges instead of walls? Abosolutely. Would it have lifted my load to share my struggles with other and get different proespective? Most ashuredly, but then again, that knowledge comes from 30+ yrs of life and experience. Definitely not the insight Indy has in this book.
The ending wasn't a nice and neatly tied up bow (Hello, what about Dad?), but all in all, I did enjoy the other threads that were tied up. Just still need to know about this central piece. *cough*NOW*cough*
Thank you to NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I recommend this book for anyone 16 and over, but be prepared for some head pulling, some heartache and defintely some tears.
